and Betsy believed the tea to be hers, should she not share with Betsy?

Oh, not half, that would not be right. No, not even a quarter, that

would be profligate. But perhaps a tenth? One little bowl which,

hoarded scrupulously . . . Surely such a cousinly gesture would ease the

awkwardness of the situation? Betsy blinked hard, though only once. She went and got the canister

from her kitchen and placed it firmly in Abigail's hands. Then they both

burst out laughing. "Cousin Betsy, let me prepare a good strong cup in your kitchen." "Fair is fair. I brewed a pot for you when it was my tea, now that it's

yours you can brew one for me."

When her uncle Isaac came in from Salem on business Abigail asked him to come with her to her Queen Street house. He made a close inspection, checked her figures, ruminated for a moment, head on chest.

"Should I try to get the house repaired now. Uncle Isaac? I can get £25 a year rent. In all candor, we need the money."

"We all do, after our losses. The British pulled down two of my warehouses for firewood. But materials and workmen are scarce. Prices are high. You'd have to stay here to supervise."

"I wouldn't want to do that."

"When do you expect John?"

"It should be soon. He's been gone more than six months."

"Let him hire the workmen and supervise. He'll get more done for less money, and the responsibility won't be yours."

As the pox eruptions began to appear. Nab became ill. Johnny and Richard Cranch broke out but felt quite well in spite of it. Then Abigail and Mary Cranch erupted at the same moment. Abigail felt all sorts of mysterious happenings within her while the pox worked its way out, but they were both able to go about. All of the children were doing cleverly except Tommy and Charley, who were being obstinate. Tommy was inoculated a second time, after which he proudly produced a dozen spots. Charley had three inoculations, none of which took. He finally immunized himself by catching the pox from a neighboring boy with whom he was playing, and became so ill with burning fever and delirium that for forty-eight hours his life was in danger.

The Smith Family Hospital had been a success. Its occupants began making their way back to Weymouth, Lincoln, Salem, Braintree. Before Abigail could leave, Samuel Adams reached home, worn out from his
